The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is being remade for Nintendo Switch 2 — everything confirmed so far

It is official. After months of leaks and speculation, Nintendo confirmed during the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is being remade for Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo's exact words: "The Nintendo 64 classic returns for a new generation in 2026, reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2." More details were promised for a future date.

Official reveal trailer

What the trailer shows

The reveal trailer runs just over one minute and is light on gameplay — deliberately so. It opens with a voiceover narration describing the Kokiri, the forest children Link lives among at the start of the game. Each child has a fairy. There is one boy who does not.

The trailer then cuts to a sleeping Young Link. A Triforce symbol glows on his hand. The modern Ocarina of Time logo appears. That is essentially all we see — but what we see is significant.

The art style is a clear departure from the cel-shaded aesthetic of the Breath of the Wild era. This is a more realistic rendition of Link than anything Nintendo has previously shown — grounded and cinematic, while keeping the whimsical fantasy setting of Hyrule intact. Link has a new outfit: a more casual take on the iconic green tunic. The trailer suggests voice acting is present, with the narrator potentially being Rauru, the Sage of Light.

The original game

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was originally released for Nintendo 64 in November 1998. It holds a Metacritic score of 99 — the highest-rated game of all time on the site. It introduced Z-targeting combat, a day-night cycle, and a fully three-dimensional Hyrule for the first time in the series. It is widely credited with establishing the template for 3D action-adventure games that the entire industry followed for the next decade.

The game previously received a remaster for Nintendo 3DS in 2011 — Ocarina of Time 3D — which added improved visuals, touchscreen support, and Master Quest. The Switch 2 remake is the first ground-up rebuild the game has ever received.
