Forty years after it traumatized a generation of kids in theaters, The Transformers: The Movie is going back to the big screen. Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing the 1986 animated film back for a limited six-day run, September 17–22, restored in 4K with premium large-format 4DX presentations in select markets.
Hasbro is calling it the "Apology Tour"
That's not a joke framing — it's the actual name Hasbro is using for this 40th anniversary campaign, a nod to the film's most notorious moment: the mid-movie death of Optimus Prime, which blindsided an entire generation of young moviegoers in 1986 and remains one of the most talked-about scenes in franchise history. Every screening also includes the world premiere of an all-new CG-animated short, Optimus Prime: Awakening.
Why the original film still holds up as a big deal
This isn't just a nostalgia cash-in on a kids' cartoon. The 1986 film had a genuinely stacked voice cast: Orson Welles as the planet-devouring Unicron (his final film role before his death), Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Frank Welker as Megatron, and Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. An arena-rock soundtrack featuring Stan Bush's "The Touch" gave it a bigger, darker, more cinematic feel than the TV series it bridged.
A bittersweet moment this year specifically
This re-release lands just weeks after Peter Cullen's passing on August 26. Seeing his original Optimus Prime performance back on the big screen, so soon after his death, gives this particular anniversary run a different weight than a typical revival screening.
