Three fresh stories from the last few days: Marvel's quietly rebuilding retailer trust while its Compact Comics line grows, DC is honoring one of the medium's most influential artists on his centennial, and two of September's biggest retailer promotions just landed on the exact same Saturday.
Marvel doubles down on retailer relations and Compact Comics
Since the departure of 20-year sales and marketing veteran David Gabriel earlier this year, Marvel has been rebuilding its retailer relationships in ways that go beyond a new executive suite. The Midnight line is the clearest example: all three debut issues ship the same day with no other Marvel titles released alongside them to compete for attention, and the variant program has been kept deliberately more concise and open-to-order than a typical Marvel event.
At the same time, Marvel's Compact Comics push keeps expanding. After the Spider-Man: Brand New Day collection launched the line at $9.99 — finally matching DC Compact Comics' price point after the pricier, less successful Premier Collection — Marvel has now announced Ultimate Compact Comics and Spider-Verse Compact Comics collections for March 2027, gathering the first year of Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimates, X-Men, and Black Panther, plus early Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales stories.
DC honors Joe Kubert's 100th birthday
This September would have been Joe Kubert's 100th birthday, and DC is marking it with a run of releases honoring the Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, and Tarzan artist who also founded the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. The centerpiece is a DC Special #5 Facsimile Edition (September 16), pairing the original 1969 issue Kubert curated himself with a new artist-jam homage cover built by Kubert family members and Kubert School alumni — Adam Kubert, Andy Kubert, Emma Kubert, Amanda Conner, and several others. It's joined by Joe Kubert: 100 Years — A Life in Covers #1, a gallery one-shot spanning his career, and the Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert Deluxe Edition collecting some of his best-known war stories.
Batman Day and Local Comic Shop Day collide on September 19
Two of the year's biggest retailer promotions fall on the exact same Saturday this year. Batman Day 2026 is anchored by Batman of Two Worlds #1 from Matt Fraction and Javier Fernández — retailers had to opt in by today, September 2, and agree to keep this year's exclusives under wraps until the 19th, with no early sales, previews, or reviews permitted. Local Comic Shop Day lands the same day, having just added Watchmen and V for Vendetta film tie-ins to its own exclusive lineup. Two major promotional pushes on one Saturday — worth planning staffing and floor space for well ahead of time.
