Nintendo's live-action Zelda adaptation has been in the works since it was first announced in November 2023, and until this week it didn't even have an official title. That changed at the same Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct (September 8) that gave the Ocarina of Time remake its release date.
The title is exactly what you'd guess
The film is simply called The Legend of Zelda — no subtitle, unlike The Super Mario Bros. Movie or The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto addressed that choice directly during the Direct: "Once you see the film, you'll understand why there isn't a subtitle. This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series, built up through the games over 40 years."
That framing matters — this isn't a direct adaptation of any single game, but an original story drawing on four decades of series lore. Miyamoto also teased that the Triforce will play a role, without elaborating further.
Release date and cast
The film is now dated for April 30, 2027 in theaters, distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures. Confirmed cast:

Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) directs. No trailer was shown at this Direct — title and release date were the full extent of the reveal, with a dedicated trailer presentation expected later, following the same rollout pattern Nintendo used for its Mario films.
Worth knowing: this is a separate project from the game remake
It's easy to conflate this with the Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, since both were announced at the same Direct — but they're unrelated projects. The movie is an original live-action story; the game remake is a faithful rebuild of the 1998 original. Both happen to be arriving within about six months of each other (the game November 5, 2026; the film April 30, 2027).
