Sony's long-gestating Helldivers movie has found its new lead: Reacher star Alan Ritchson is in talks to headline the adaptation, stepping in after Jason Momoa's June exit over reported creative differences.
The project
Justin Lin (the Fast & Furious franchise) directs, with PlayStation Productions' Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash producing alongside Lin's Perfect Storm Entertainment. The film draws from Arrowhead Game Studios' Helldivers franchise — the 2015 original and its wildly successful 2024 sequel, which sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in its first four months and scored an 82 on Metacritic. Plot details remain under wraps, though the premise is a natural fit for Ritchson: an elite squad of shock troops defending the fictional Super Earth from an expanding alien threat, in a tone critics have long compared to Starship Troopers.
Why Ritchson makes sense here
This would be Ritchson's first true theatrical studio lead. He's spent recent years building action-hero credibility across Amazon's Reacher (its fourth season just wrapped) and Fast X, and the hard-charging soldier archetype at the center of Helldivers lines up closely with his existing work. Nothing is finalized yet — Sony has declined to comment, and reporting is clear this is still a negotiation rather than a signed deal.
Release timing
Helldivers is dated for November 10, 2027, part of a growing PlayStation Productions film slate that already includes Uncharted ($407M worldwide) and the Peacock/HBO adaptations Twisted Metal and The Last of Us.
Worth knowing for the shop
Video game movie adaptations reliably drive interest in tie-in and adjacent collectibles once casting news breaks — worth keeping an eye on for any Helldivers-branded merchandise or trading cards as the project moves toward production.
