Action Comics #544 (June 1983) landed at #6 on CovrPrice's top 10 for the week of June 8, 2026, valued at $34 NM. It's not a surprise — this issue contains two of the most significant key appearances in Superman's rogues gallery. Source: CovrPrice.com week of June 8, 2026.
What's in the issue
Action Comics #544 was published by DC Comics in June 1983, written by Marv Wolfman with art by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson. The issue serves as a landmark redesign issue for two of Superman's most iconic villains, introducing visual and conceptual updates that have defined both characters in every adaptation since.
1st appearance of Metallic Brainiac — This issue redesigns Brainiac from a humanoid alien into the green-skinned, chrome-skulled, mechanised form that became the character's definitive visual identity. Every Brainiac design in animation, games, and film since 1983 — including the version appearing in My Adventures with Superman Season 3 — traces directly back to this issue. 1st appearance of Lex Luthor in battle warsuit — The same issue introduces Lex Luthor's battle armour, the technological warsuit that has become as definitional to the character as his baldness. The warsuit has appeared in the Smallville television series, multiple animated adaptations, and is a central element of Luthor's characterisation across modern DC continuity.
