Absolute Catwoman #1 is in stores Wednesday June 10 — and it's already a collector's key

New #1 issues are common. New #1 issues with confirmed key appearances are something else entirely.

Absolute Catwoman #1 is in stores this Wednesday, June 10, and Key Collector Comics has already flagged it: this issue contains the first appearance of Cassandra Cain in the Absolute Universe, the first appearance of Holly Robinson in the Absolute Universe, the first team appearance of the Copycats, and the first mention of the Calicos — a team affiliated with Catwoman. That is four confirmed key facts in a debut issue.

The creative team

Che Grayson and Scott Snyder co-write, with art by Bengal. The Snyder involvement alone signals this is a flagship Absolute Universe launch — he is the architect of the line and has written Absolute Batman since its debut. Bringing him in alongside Grayson for this series tells you everything about DC's confidence in the title.

Bengal's art is a strong match for the material. Stylish, kinetic, and globe-trotting in scope — exactly what a Catwoman book should look and feel like.

The story

Selina Kyle has carved a good life for herself outside of Gotham. Through her skills and her high-tech gear, she has become the greatest thief in the world. But when someone from her past comes knocking, everything she has built starts to come apart — and she will need to follow a mystery across the globe to set it right.

A James Bond-influenced Catwoman story, set in the Absolute Universe, with Scott Snyder and Bengal. The 40-page debut issue gives the creative team room to establish the world properly.

The collector angle

First appearances of Cassandra Cain and Holly Robinson in any continuity have historically carried collector value. Cassandra Cain — who became Batgirl and later Black Bat — is a character with a significant following. Her first Absolute Universe appearance is a meaningful key regardless of what this series does long-term.

The Absolute Universe has demonstrated that its first appearances hold secondary market value. Absolute Batman #1 and Absolute Superman #1 both commanded strong premiums in the weeks following release.

Key Collector Comics current estimates: Low $1 · Mid $2 · High $5. First-week premiums on Absolute Universe #1 issues with confirmed keys have historically exceeded these early estimates.
