Supergirl opens June 26 — Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and what to read before you see it

Three weeks after Masters of the Universe, DC Studios drops what many consider its most anticipated film of 2026.

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie — who previously directed I, Tonya and Cruella — and stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The film tells a darker origin story set before Kara makes her way to Earth, exploring who she was before she became Supergirl.

The cast

Milly Alcock's casting as Supergirl was announced alongside the broader DCU slate and was widely praised. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman from the 2025 James Gunn film. The major wildcard: Jason Momoa as Lobo — a significant departure from his Aquaman years and a character that feels tailor-made for his particular energy.

The DCU context

Supergirl is the second film in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, following Superman's strong 2025 debut. The film is based partly on the Woman of Tomorrow storyline — a critically acclaimed series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely that gave Kara a grittier, more morally complex characterisation. Why Lobo matters

Lobo is one of DC's most distinctive characters — an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter created as a satire of 1980s anti-hero excess who became a genuine fan favourite. Jason Momoa's casting is inspired. For collectors, Lobo's key appearances span Omega Men, his solo series from 1990, and Simon Bisley's iconic painted run.
