Insomniac Games built two of the best superhero games ever made with Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel. Their next Marvel project is Wolverine, and it now has a confirmed release date: September 15, 2026 on PlayStation 5.
Extended gameplay was revealed at the June 2026 State of Play broadcast. Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine — but the past wasn't finished with him yet. Three years after walking out on his team, Wolverine rejoins the mutant task force Team X in their darkest hour. Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants, and only Wolverine has what it takes to save them.
What the gameplay reveals
The State of Play trailer confirms a noticeably darker edge than Insomniac's previous Marvel games — brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless action. Confirmed locations include Japan, Madripoor, and Canada — all iconic settings from the best Wolverine comics runs. Confirmed villains include Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red, and a Sentinel. Jean Grey also appears, assisting Logan in the story. Wolverine will be voiced by actor Liam McIntyre.
The comics reading list
If you want to understand who Wolverine is at his best before the game drops — and why Japan, Madripoor, and Sabretooth matter so much to the character — the reading list maps directly onto the game's confirmed content:
- Wolverine (1982) by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont — the four-issue limited series set in Japan that defined Wolverine as a solo character. The Japan setting in the game draws directly from this run.
- Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith — the definitive origin story, explaining the adamantium process and everything that made Wolverine what he is. Canada-set, brutal, and extraordinary.
- Wolverine: Madripoor Knights — Madripoor is one of Wolverine's most important locations in the comics, and any run that takes Logan there connects directly to what the game is building.
- Old Man Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven — a post-apocalyptic Wolverine story that served as partial inspiration for the film Logan. Sabretooth features prominently.
- Jason Aaron's Wolverine run — the character's most complete modern treatment, spanning multiple titles and years.
