How we got here
GTA VI has been delayed twice: originally targeted for fall 2025, pushed to May 26, 2026, then pushed again to the current November 19, 2026 date. It will mark thirteen years since GTA V (2013) — by far the longest gap between mainline entries in the series' history.
Update, Sept 11: hardware sales are already spiking
In the UK, PS5 sales jumped 33% and Xbox Series X/S sales jumped 34% in the week following the Extended Look reveal — more than two months before launch. Take-Two's own financial guidance names GTA VI as the primary driver of its full fiscal year outlook, projecting $8–8.2 billion in net bookings.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson gave two notable comments in recent interviews: the game has reportedly grown so large that no single person on the development team knows the whole thing inside and out, and Rockstar is not yet ready to guarantee a 60 FPS mode on console. Neither point should be read as a confirmed final spec — both are early framing from a developer, not an official performance target.
Separately, Take-Two is pursuing a new subpoena against Discord as part of its ongoing investigation into the 2022 and 2026 leak incidents, and has asked the court to keep details of that request sealed.
Update, Aug 27–28: the Netflix "Extended Look" aired
Rockstar's promised extended footage reveal happened as scheduled — a 25–26 minute piece called Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, captured entirely from in-game PS5 footage. Netflix had it exclusively for six hours before it went up on Rockstar's own site and YouTube at 9:00pm ET. It's the third piece of official GTA VI footage overall, following two shorter trailers (the most recent from May 2025).
Real gameplay and story details confirmed by the reveal:
- You can play as Jason, as Lucia, or switch seamlessly between the two during missions
- Player decisions affect relationships and how other characters respond to you
- Eating and exercise visibly affect your character's body, similar to GTA San Andreas
- NPCs are described as more diverse in appearance and more realistically reactive to player behavior
- An in-game social media system is included
- The footage centers on a heist-driven sequence with the pair pulling jobs across convenience stores, jewelry stores, and diners while evading police, opening with a drug deal at an apartment that turns into a shootout
Worth noting: unverified leaked gameplay clips continued circulating in the days before the reveal, and Rockstar publicly acknowledged on social media that the leaks may affect the intended reveal experience — without confirming the leaked content itself. We're still treating anything not in Rockstar's own official materials as unverified.
Still unknown
- No official hands-on gameplay demo has been shown as of this writing — the Extended Look is footage, not hands-on play.
- No PC release date.
- No confirmed collector's or special edition beyond Standard and Ultimate.
- No confirmed frame rate target on console.
We'll update this page if:
- Rockstar releases further gameplay breakdowns or story details
- A PC release date is announced
- The release date changes again
For anything narrower or more specific — a single major event, a full gameplay deep-dive once hands-on previews exist — we'll publish that as its own separate post rather than folding everything in here.
