Understanding Final Order Cutoff is the single most useful thing a new comic shopper can learn — it directly determines whether you'll be able to get the book you want at cover price.
What FOC Actually Is
Final Order Cutoff is the deadline by which comic shops must submit their final print orders to the publisher, or to their distributor, for a given issue. Once that deadline passes, the print run for that issue is locked in — no shop can add to their order after FOC closes.
Why This Matters to You as a Shopper
Comics aren't printed on demand. If a shop doesn't order enough copies of a book before FOC, and that book turns out to be popular or a surprise key issue, there is often no way to get more copies at cover price once it sells out. Some in-demand issues do get additional printings, but second printings usually carry different cover art and don't carry the same value or significance as the original print run.
The FOC Timeline in Practice
Solicitation: Publishers announce upcoming issues roughly 2–3 months ahead of release, with cover art, creative team, and a synopsis.
FOC window: Shops have a period of several weeks to gauge customer interest and place or adjust their order.
FOC deadline: Typically falls on a Monday, several weeks before the book's actual release date. At Superhero Empire, our FOC deadline is 10:00 pm Eastern every Monday.
Release / NCBD: The book ships to shops and goes on sale, almost always on a Wednesday — New Comic Book Day.
How to Use FOC as a Shopper
If there's a specific issue, variant, or exclusive cover you want — especially a lower-print-run incentive variant — pre-ordering before FOC is the only way to guarantee you get a copy. Waiting until release week means relying on whatever a shop happened to order, which may not include every variant, or may already be sold out for anything with real buzz.
